| Acrylic buyers fight proposed price hike |
Buyers are continuing to resist price increases in the U.S. acrylic acid and acrylate esters market. So far this month, proposed increases of 8¢/lb--later cut back to 3¢--appear to have failed as buyers are reluctant to agree with please from suppliers that they need to restore depleted margins.
At present, glacial acrylic acid is selling for an average 59¢/lb but suppliers want a minimum 62¢ if they can’t get 67¢, saying they have to offset higher energy and feedstock costs. But buyers say market conditions aren’t supportive of higher prices since demand remains lackluster against a background of plentiful acrylic and acrylate chemicals supply.
A report on ICISpricing.com notes that some buyers have moved from adamant that they would not accept any price increases amid weak demand to conceding marginal price increases to offset higher feedstock costs. There still is a group of buyers, though, who insist any price initiatives this summer would end in total failure |
